5 Common Car Problems and How to Fix Them

Discover the 5 most common car problems Bangladeshi drivers face - from flat batteries to overheating engines - and learn practical fixes you can try before calling a mechanic.

Every driver in Bangladesh has experienced that sinking feeling when something goes wrong with their car. Whether you're navigating Dhaka's congested streets or cruising on the highway to Chittagong, car trouble is never convenient. The good news? Most common car problems have straightforward solutions - and knowing them can save you time, money, and stress.

1. Dead or Weak Battery

A dead battery is the number one reason drivers call for help in Bangladesh. Symptoms include a clicking sound when you turn the key, dim headlights, or a completely unresponsive ignition. Batteries typically last 2-3 years in Bangladesh's hot and humid climate, which is shorter than in cooler countries.

What You Can Do

  1. Check the battery terminals for corrosion - clean them with a wire brush and baking soda solution.
  2. If you have jumper cables, ask another driver for a jump start.
  3. Test the battery voltage with a multimeter - a healthy battery reads 12.6V or above.
  4. If the battery is more than 3 years old, consider replacing it proactively.

2. Flat or Damaged Tires

Dhaka's roads are notorious for potholes, construction debris, and sharp objects that can puncture your tires. A flat tire can happen at any time, and knowing how to handle it is essential for every driver.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Pull over to a safe, flat area away from traffic.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts before jacking up the car.
  3. Use the jack to lift the vehicle and remove the flat tire.
  4. Mount the spare tire and hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  5. Lower the car and fully tighten the lug nuts.

3. Engine Overheating

With temperatures regularly hitting 35°C during Bangladesh's summer months, engine overheating is a frequent problem. The most common cause is low coolant levels, but it can also indicate a leaking radiator, a broken water pump, or a malfunctioning thermostat.

  • Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot - the pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Turn off the AC and turn on the heater to draw heat away from the engine.
  • Pull over and let the engine cool for at least 20 minutes before checking coolant levels.
  • Top up coolant if needed, but have the system inspected by a mechanic as soon as possible.

4. Brakes Squeaking or Grinding

Your brakes are the most critical safety system in your car. If you hear a high-pitched squeak when braking, your brake pads are wearing thin. A grinding sound means the pads are completely worn and metal is contacting metal - this is dangerous and needs immediate attention.

When to See a Mechanic

  • Squeaking that persists for more than a day or two.
  • Grinding or growling sounds when you press the brake pedal.
  • The brake pedal feels spongy or goes to the floor.
  • The car pulls to one side when braking.

5. Check Engine Light

The check engine light can signal anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine problem. While it's tempting to ignore it, doing so can lead to costly repairs down the line. In Bangladesh, where diagnostic tools aren't always readily available, many drivers put off this important warning.

  1. Check if the gas cap is properly tightened - this is the most common and easiest fix.
  2. If the light is flashing, pull over immediately - this indicates a severe problem.
  3. Use an OBD-II scanner to read the error code, or visit a mechanic for a diagnostic check.
  4. Don't ignore a steady check engine light - schedule an inspection within a few days.

Understanding these common problems empowers you to make informed decisions about your vehicle. While some issues can be handled with basic tools and knowledge, others require professional expertise. The key is recognizing the difference and acting quickly to prevent small problems from becoming expensive repairs.
